The Sunset Road, which runs along the west coast of Kagoshima Prefecture from Satsumasendai to Akune, certainly lives up to its name! Dotted with white-sand beaches that face the East China Sea as well as laybys where you can sit and enjoy the views, the route boasts stunning sunsets. Check out Doll Rock silhouetted against the red sky to see if its name is deserved.

During the day, the entire coastline is great fun to explore, from the laid-back beaches of Ushinohama and Okawa Island to the marine activity-focused Nishikata beach. For a taste of local food and drink, pop into Akune Michi no Eki on the roadside where you can have a bite to eat and browse the market.

Don’t forget to taste the regional citrus fruit, bontan. You can also try varieties of bontan ice cream, candy and biscuits. Whatever you choose, the flavor is a refreshing treat to enjoy while gazing out over the ocean.
