Rifle Corps
(鉄砲隊(種子島))
In 1543, Portuguese sailors washed ashore in Tanegashima and introduced matchlock guns to the local ruler. Shortly afterwards, local blacksmiths attempted to imitate these firearms and, despite great struggle, eventually succeeded. Their traditional style is kept alive by the Matchlock Preservation Society, and you can still see the guns in action at events today.
