Mushiroze
(ムシロ瀬)
Granite rock streaching across majestic scenery
Mushiroze is the name for a granite coastline, which can be found on the northwestern tip of Tokunoshima. Rock formations here offer magnificent scenery that is quite rare in southern Japan. There are large slabs of rock piled alongside and on top of each other. In winter, north winds bring sea spray, adding to the uniqueness of the environment.
Facing the ocean, Tokunoshima’s Mushiroze is highly recommended by anglers as a fishing spot due to the many migratory fish that pass by. Near the coast, you can find clusters of Indian hawthorn, a plant of the rose family that is used in the dyes of Oshima tsumugi (pongee), a soft thin cloth woven from raw silk.
