Makurazaki Nanmeikan Cultural Resource Center
(枕崎文化資料センター「南溟館」)
A base for urban development through art
Nanmeikan is an art gallery on top of a small hill.
With a building that evokes a ship's anchor and wave-shaped benches outside, Nanmeikan sports a design befitting a port town.
For over 20 years, the city of Makurazaki held the Kaze no Geijutsuten art exhibition. Since 2016, this exhibition has been held as the Makurazaki International Art Award Exhibition as part of Makurazaki's push for urban development through art.
In addition to prize-winning entries from this exhibition, Nanmeikan also permanently displays the Tashiro Collection, which consists of valuable works donated by Makurazaki native Mitsuo Tashiro.
Makurazaki is also home to the Aozora Bijutsukan, an art museum with over 30 three-dimensional works.
