Matsuyama Castle Ruins
(松山城址)
In a corner of Shiroyama Sogo Park stands the ruins of the outer citadel of Matsuyama Castle, which is said to have been built by Tairano Shigeyori in 1188. Through many wars, the castle later came under the control of the Shimazu Clan. There is now an observatory made to look like a castle. On a clear day, you can see as far away as the Kirishima Mountains and Sakurajima, as well as all of the town of Matsuyama. This scenic view has been selected as one of the best eight views in Soo. The site is also a well-known cherry blossom viewing spot. At night, the site is lit up, allowing visitors to enjoy nighttime cherry blossom viewing as well.
◇Typical best viewing period: Late March - Early April
◇Number of cherry trees: ~500
