Formed by volcanic activity in ancient times, Lake Ikeda has a circumference of 15 km and a maximum depth of 233 m. It is the largest caldera lake in Kyushu.
About 5,700 years ago, the lake was formed into its present shape by five separate eruptions in the vicinity and surrounding area.
Many giant eels inhabit the lake and are designated a protected species by Ibusuki City. Each eel weighs about 20 kg and measures 1.8 m in length and 60 cm around the middle. Lake Ikeda is also said to be home to a mysterious creature nicknamed Issie.
Flowers that bloom in all four seasons are planted around the lake's shores. In January, nanohana (canola flowers) are in full bloom. Many people come to take part in the Nanohana Marathon, or to spend time on the jogging and cycling courses. Visitors at this time can experience a slightly early arrival of spring.
