Learn about the history of the Meiji Restoration (1868) and young Imperial loyalists at the end of the Edo period (1603-1867).
At this historical sightseeing facility, visitors can enjoy learning all about the Satsuma region at the end of the Edo period and the Meiji Restoration. It is located in Kajiya-cho, the birthplace of Saigo Takamori, Okubo Toshimichi and other key figures of the period, which has made it known as the home of the Meiji Restoration.
The history of Kagoshima, which became the driving force of modern Japan, and the achievements of Kagoshima's forefathers are introduced using video, dioramas (models), and robots.
Visitors can enjoy learning about the Satsuma clan's unique educational methods, such as the goju structured system of education, through hands-on exhibits.
The centerpiece of the facility's display are two dramas shown on screen in the Ishin Taikan Hall on the first basement floor. In "The Road to Restoration," a realistic and dynamic drama unfolds with life-size robots resembling Saigo Takamori, Okubo Toshimichi, as well as multi-screen displays.
Meanwhile, "Satsuma Students, Westward!" focuses on the students sent to the United Kingdom by the Satsuma clan to learn Western technology after the Anglo-Satsuma War in 1863, breaking a national ban on dispatching such students overseas.
