Cape Sata Observatory Park
(佐多岬公園)
Head down to mainland Japan's southernmost point if you're going to Kagoshima!
*Areas within and around Cape Sata Observatory Park are undergoing refurbishment. It is expected to reopen in 2018.
Cape Sata, the southernmost point of mainland Japan, lies on the same latitude as New Delhi, India and Cairo, Egypt.
The climate is warm even in winter, and you can see subtropical plants like bougainvillea and hibiscus waving in the sea breeze.
Enjoy the breathtaking vista of islands such as Tanegashima Island and Yakushima Island in the horizon. Off the coast lies Japan's oldest extant lighthouse, designed by an Scotsman in the early Meiji period.
*Please avoiding visiting after sunset for safety reasons.
*Please be suitably attired for walking as the trail to the southernmost tip is about 800 meters long.
