Hakozaki Hachiman Shrine
(箱崎八幡神社)
Hakozaki Hachiman Shrine is home to the largest shrine bell in Japan. At 4m high, 3.4m wide and 5t in weight, it is an impressive sight that demands to be rung. It is reportedly the best shrine in Japan to make a wish for luck or height. Look out for the posts to measure how tall you are!
Beautiful statues of cranes, a reminder of Izumi’s importance as a migratory ground, can be found flanking the path to the tori grate and throughout the grounds. There is also a line of tori gates in rich vermillion similar to the famous tori gate tunnels of Kyoto.
Adjacent to the shrine is a silver replica of the gold bell. Inside it are ancient face masks and Japan’s smallest shrine bell, which measures only 2mm across. Pick up the magnifying glass to help you spot it!
